ERPNext usually reaches the shortlist for one of two reasons. Licence costs on the current system are growing faster than the value it returns, or the business wants an ERP it can host, read and change itself without a vendor setting the terms.
Open source is not a price argument
The licence is free. The project is not. Buying ERPNext as the cheap option means paying the difference later in effort: hosting, upgrades, customisation, and the skills to run all three. There is a second cost that rarely appears in the comparison. The interface and documentation lead in English, and local requirements, from an Arabic interface to tax authority e-invoicing formats, are configuration work rather than a default setting.

Settle the platform question first, honestly

Decide hosting and upgrades before anything else
Who hosts, who upgrades, and how customisations survive a version jump. With open source this decides total cost far more than the licence does, and it is the question most often deferred.
Customise as an app, never in the core
Changes live in a separate Frappe app alongside the standard. That keeps your system upgradable. An ERP with changes written into its core turns every release into a migration project.
Plan localisation as real work
Chart of accounts, tax codes, document layouts, and the interface language for the roles that need it. It is manageable, but it does not happen by itself, and it belongs in the plan rather than in the week before go-live.

Is ERPNext really free?
The software is GPLv3 and carries no licence fee. Cost sits in hosting, implementation, customisation, training and ongoing operation. Over several years the total is often below a licensed system for a mid-sized business, but the saving is in the licence, not in the project.
ERPNext or Odoo, which fits better?
ERPNext argues for itself when you want full control of source and hosting and will not accept per-user licence tiers. Odoo argues for itself when you need the wider module and partner ecosystem and can live with the Enterprise model. We implement both and decide it against your operation rather than a preference.
Does ERPNext handle regional tax and e-invoicing requirements?
It supports the underlying structures, including chart of accounts, tax templates and document formats, and regional e-invoicing integrations exist in the ecosystem. Treat the specific requirement as configuration and verification work in your jurisdiction, confirmed with your tax advisor, rather than as something the platform provides out of the box.
How long does an implementation take?
For a mid-sized business covering finance, purchasing, inventory and sales, a few months is realistic. Manufacturing, multi-company structures or heavy legacy data extend it. We phase the work so one area runs in production before the next begins.
Can we move away later?
Your data and source are yours, which is the practical value of open source. A move is still a project. The point is that you should not be forced into one because a licence model changed.
